Ultrasound is acoustic (sound) energy or sound waves which have frequencies higher than the upper limit of human hearing. Ultrasound wave frequencies ranges from 20,000 Hz up to 20 MHz and over.
Ultrasonic cleaning is a technology that allows the removal of debris, bacteria and other contaminants from liquids.
Ultrasonic cleaners work by emitting high frequency sound waves that generate an electromagnetic field and induce a continual cycle of compression and rarefaction waves in the beer. This creates a vacuum cavity within the liquid in a process known as cavitation. Cavitation is the formation of microscopic bubbles, or cavities in the liquid. These bubbles grow, during the low pressure phase and then compress or implode during the low pressure phase of the wave (rarefaction), generating energy.
The subsequent energy produces high forces which remove contaminants from the surface of the material being cleaned.
Electronic beer line cleaning systems work on a similar process to ultrasonic cleaners by inducing a process known as deagglomeration. This process prevents the yeast molecules in the beer from clumping together and adhering to the inner surface of the beer lines. As there is less debris and contamination on the beerlines, the line cleaning schedule to be reduced to a minimum of once every three weeks.
Historically such cleaners have been known as Ultrasonic cleaners, due to the similar process that the technology effects. The use of this terminology is in fact incorrect as most manufacturers of such equipment utilise a waveform in the region of 15 kHz (Kilohertz) which can be classified as a sound wave.
There are many types of electronic beer line cleaners available, all of which have a similar mode of operation but have significant differences in the effectiveness of their operation.
Digital beer line cleaners; these systems utilise a computerised micro processor to generate a digital sound wave.
This technology is state of the art, the main advantage of digital wave signals as compared to analogue wave signals is that digital wave signals maintain their quality over longer distances and are less susceptible to interference from background noise.
In practical terms digital beer line cleaners allow the line cleaning schedule to be extended to a guaranteed 4 weekly cycle, due to the quality of the waveform. Manufacturers of digital beer line cleaning systems available in the UK are Beer Saver6, StayClean, Tech POS Intelliline and QB Line Master.
Analogue beer line cleaners are less expensive to manufacture as they do not utilise micro processor technology, but instead use a series of electrical components to produce sonic sound waves
In practical terms most analogue systems, being subject to distortion and loss, can only effectively extend the line cleaning schedule to once every three weeks.
